The Windows registry is a complex filing system made up of six HKEY folders that store the important preference and settings information for software and hardware.  This information extends from something as simple as your desktop wallpaper to things like which program opens a .doc file.  The registry is extremely important to the proper functioning of your computer.

The registry has a tendency to get corrupted and cluttered with obsolete and orphaned files, and this can slow down your computer and cause errors.  The best way to deal with this situation is to find a good registry cleaner and use it on a regular basis to clear out the excess files and folders from your computer.  It would be pretty much impossible to do this by hand.
