My daughter in law was born and raised in Japan. When my son was in the Navy and stationed in Japan, he met her and married her. When he told me that he was bringing his bride home to meet the family, I worried that I would not be able to communicate with her. I was surprised to find out that she was fluent in English. I began learning Japanese, so I would be able to communicate with her. I thought it would be much harder to learn Japanese words. I learned enough that I would be able to carry on a simple conversation with her. It was educational, but I didn’t need to do so after all.
